Accomplishment is important.

Monday, October 6th, 2008

A few years ago, I read quotation. “Motivation is what gets you going. Habit is what keeps you going.” This is such a true statement. A key component in that process is a sense of accomplishment. This is especially true for any artist. Why especially?

Because artists seem to own the most home-based businesses wherein mood and emotion play key roles in productivity. Yeah, that sounds good. lol

But think about it. If we make a goal and don’t meet it, that lack grows dark and pulls us down. But if we make a goal and meet it, then we have an extra push to get going tomorrow. And the next day. So, if you’re down and not making goals, the best thing to do is make one. Let it feel good and inspire you to make another.

That’s what is keeping me going today, anyway. I’m pulling things together. :)

Openings…

Wednesday, April 2nd, 2008

I finished the the opening scene yesterday. Now I know the changes I need to revise it and build from there. It was one of those mornings when I was able to wake up at 5 am and get a lot done.

Today was not one of those days. I woke up way late and haven’t begun, yet, but I wanted to post progress for yesterday’s work.

Oh, and last night? We watched War of the Roses, On Demand. I love the free movies. Many of which I’d forgotten were ever made, or never had a chance to watch. Craig had no interest in War of the Roses for a long time, but I tell you what. Just watching it he laughed so hard seeing some of the things Kathleen Turner and Michael Douglas did to each other.

Kathleen Turner is one of the most beautiful actresses I’ve ever seen. And Miracle Child has developed an interesting fondness in Michael since I showed her Romancing the Stone. She thinks he’s hot. lol Him and Bruce Willis. I can’t disagree about Bruce. I think bald is beautiful. lol

Another beautiful actress is Michelle Pfeifer. And her handsome hero, Jack Nicholson, in Wolf. I’d never seen it before, but it was great to see a werewolf film done so well. And the insights to publishing…well. True or not, that was cool. I wish I was a “cool” looking author like Maude. Dressed in black and silver with hair to match. Wow. lol

All in all, not a bad day. Which is so good. It was Miracle Child’s 3 yr anniv since her last chemo treatment. I know, how cruel to do that on April Fool’s Day, but in all honesty, most holidays have a whole new meaning now.

Danni, please email me at jlh@jamieleighhansen.com so I can send you your free book. :)

Have a great day!

I feel inspired today…

Tuesday, April 1st, 2008

Wish me luck. :) I’m jumping further into book 3. Book 2 has been retitled Cursed. It’s about Alex and his high school sweetheart, who’s a bit more than the girl next door.

I’ve been awaiting revisions on Cursed and reading The Anatomy of Story by John Truby while letting book 3 bloom in my mind. It’s titled in the same vein as the other two: Damned. I’ve had so much fun with that. My writing plan is The Damned Plan. I refer to it as that Damned book. It makes me giggle.

I’m starting fresh. Lots of notes written on a story that’s been in my head a good long while, but only the first 750 words are written. It feels good.

Merry Christmas!

Wednesday, December 5th, 2007

Every year I swear to myself I’ll be all caught up by Christmas (Okay, for me, Christmas begins the night of Thanksgiving. :)) and ready to relax and enjoy my favorite time of year. No such luck this year.  I am determined to have more than 5 days free and clear, however.

Betrayed is ramping up for an incredible release. I heard today there is buzz!  Ha!  I am so happy.  That one word put me in mind of an energizing massage. So very exciting. The January 5th launch party at Borders is looking good with pizza and prizes and, of course, me signing the book. This is so amazing. We are now down to 30 days until the January 2nd release!  It’s almost ready to share with the world!

After 6 years of solid work on Betrayed, it’s almost unbelievable. :)

In the meantime, book 2 has been renamed. The new title is Cursed.  That one change has really helped me focus where I was taking Alex and Elizabeth’s story. I am truly having fun. It seems the second draft is where I really hit my stride. :)

Now here is something I found thanks to one of my new favorite authors, Keri Arthur:

Cursed Progress:

Cursed Progress

* I just have to keep reminding myself whenever I get discouraged this is the second draft and I have 115k from the first draft to draw from, not only new words I have to write.

** Update **

1804 words. While not a record and not a large jump in numbors, they were all newly written words and 3 of the most powerful scenes. Tonight was good work. Now, sleep. Before I pass out.

Writing…

Monday, October 1st, 2007

Some days writing is so rewarding and fun. Those are days when you wake up and have an epiphany about what to do next. Then you consider it more in depth and realize that all along you’ve had the seeds of this epiphany scattered throughout the work.  It’s moments like this when you think, hey!  I really haven’t been wasting time.

Which is such a hard thought to deal with. Who likes to waste time? To do work that isn’t a part of the final, finished product? And then, someone can work for years, writing pages and pages and thinking for ages, but unless that finished book, that story, is all laid out for someone to read straight through, how do you know they’re really doing anything?  It’s not like a pizza where anyone can watch as it’s slowly assembled, cooked and served. Books take time if they’re to be any good.

My dh and I discussed this again last night.  When he looks over, I am playing Sims 2 or Sudoku, highlighting in my “yellow book” or just watching TV.  Well, what I told him is “Never accuse a writer of not writing or they’ll prove you wrong”.

Which in our case, means, I’m stuck on a scene, go read the whole chapter so we can talk about it.

He hates that.  LOL  :)  He doesn’t like to read partial stories.  But it at least proves I have some of it down.  LOL

Well, for the record, my “yellow book” was Dwight V. Swain’s Techniques of the Selling Writer.  Now, I’ve tried to read this book 3 times over the years.  The first time I couldn’t keep at it because it was so info-dense I couldn’t grasp it well.  Later, I waited until it was due back at the library to peek at it again.  But, in July, my wonderful dh bought me a copy. Knowing I would keep it forever, (I mean, after having it recommended hundreds of times over ten years, I figured that out.) I took a highlighter to it.  Turns out, that really helps to digest bits at a time.

So, 5, 10, 20 minutes at a time, I worked my way through it and finished it last night.  And as I was reading, I was thinking and having epiphanies and enjoying everything he says in it.  And throughout that, I could only wonder, why was it so hard to go through the first time?  Probably:

1. It was a library book, so I couldn’t mark it or keep it long.

2. I didn’t mark it, so I was trying to swallow too big of chunks in one sitting.

3. I have since grown as a writer.  Yay me!

So, my “yellow book” was a writing book.  And Sudoku is good for seeing patterns. And TV is good for character arcs and Sims 2 is excellent for visualizing.

And all these things-that-don’t-look-like-working were the best exercises I could be doing for this morning’s epiphany to pop through.  :)

It’s a good day.
